  • IPC team membership

The IPC team consists of the following:

  • Dr Cathy Williamson, GP partner, IPC lead
  • Mrs. Sue Suggett, Practice Manager, joint IPC lead
  • Sr. Jeanette Oxley, Practice Nursing Sister, lead for staff well being and immunisation
  • Mrs. Sarah Stones, Health Care Assistant, lead for decontamination of equipment and reusable medical devices
  • Mrs. Lindsey Cave, Reception Manager, lead for cleaning and decontamination of the environment

  • Annual IPC meeting

The team met on 23 October 2019. Minutes of the last meeting, Action Points and Matters Arising were discussed.

  • Policies, procedures and guidance

Current IPC policy and annual statement are available on the practice website and on the Practice Intranet. Policies are due for review in Nov 2019.

  • Infection transmission incidents

No cases of actual transmission of infection have been reported.

  • Significant events

One new significant event was reported and discussed by the IPC team regarding a patient who had attended surgery who was subsequently found to have whooping cough. A risk assessment was conducted using Public Health England guidelines. No significant risk was identified to other patients and the examining clinician was alerted to enable them to take appropriate precautions.

The recent children’s flu clinic had to be cancelled at the last minute due to delay in supply – this is a national issue. The team noted that the text alert system to parents seems to have worked really effectively! The clinic will be rescheduled once supplies of vaccine received.

  • Audits

This year’s infection prevention and control audits were carried out by Sarah and Mary in September 2019: cold chain audit; waste container audit; annual IPC audit. As a result:

  • The carpets have been replaced in two of the doctor’s consulting rooms as were becoming worn and stained
  • One clinical waste bin has been identified as needing attention
  • Couches with rips or splits are being prioritised for replacement

  • Risk assessment

The team discussed seating for patients in reception. Some of the chairs are plastic and high backed but some are fabric covered and difficult to clean – specific adhoc and specialist cleaning is done as needed. The team discussed that this would be a suitable topic for its next risk assessment exercise 2019-20.

  • Staff training

Handwashing training has been provided for all staff since the last meeting. Staff undertake annual IPC training via Bluestream academy.

  • Future plans

The IPC team meets approximately every 6-12 months and welcomes comments or suggestions. Our next Annual IPC review is due by Nov 2020
